Choosing the Appropriate Homecoming Dress by Jeremy Smith
The annual fall homecoming dance is an opportunity for high school students to get out of their blue jeans and T-shirts and into some fancy clothes. While it is not as formal as the prom, where tuxedos and ballgown dresses are the standard attire, it is still a semi-formal event that does require special homecoming dresses. To ensure that they get the most flattering outfit, teenage girls should keep a few things in mind when shopping.
One of the first steps for anyone is to figure out the look that they want, be it chic and cutting-edge, sophisticated and timeless, or sexy and the center of attention. By looking at some magazines and websites ahead of time to see what is in style, the young ladies can narrow down their favorite styles. When they go shopping, they can seek out dresses with similar design lines.
Color is one element that can have a major impact on whether or not clothing is complementary. Even though everyone can technically wear any color, it is the shade and intensity that are important. For instance, a girl with blond hair and tan skin would look nice in a cherry red shade, while a redhead should opt for tomato red or brick red hues. Neutral tones, like gold, silver, white and black, are always in style, easy to find and look good on most people.
Next is the length and cut of homecoming dresses. The trendy length these days is short, ranging anywhere from around the knee, to a miniskirt length. The skirt can be tight and form-fitting, a fit-and-flare style or a voluminous bubble skirt. However, some teens do select dresses with a longer skirt. In this case, it is usually tight with a long slit up the side of the thigh or has a shorter front and a longer back. As for the neckline, choices include strapless, halter, spaghetti strap, asymmetrical, bateau and off-shoulder.
Although the dress is the star of the outfit, the other elements need to be coordinated. These items include the shoes, jewelry and handbag. Instead of selecting shoes that match the color of the homecoming dress, it looks more modern to wear a contrasting or neutral shade. One stand-out piece of jewelry, such as chandelier earrings or a chunky necklace, should be enough. To carry things like a compact and lipstick, bring along a small beaded or sequined purse. Finally, it is a smart idea to have a lightweight silk or cashmere shawl handy, in case it gets chilly outside before and after the dance.
