Uniting Two Families at Weddings by Cornelia O’Hara
It is mostly about two people who are bonded by love that is why they want to get married. But in most couples, they are also surrounded by families and close friends whom they want to share their love with. However, traditional families may find weddings as a challenge because most of them just want to interfere with your own affair. Some may even feel the pressure of uniting these two families because most of them just simply want it their own way. It is like, they are dressing Barbie and Ken and you and your fiancé are just that.
Most parents do not realize that when they were dating, they feel that it is their own affair, but now that they became parents themselves, they simply just want to put all their own output and experiences to be used at the wedding. Uniting two families may also bring huge challenges since most just want to be part of your life. Your offspring will be their future descendants and that makes it even more complicated as you plan your wedding.
When it comes to your wedding planning, parents may find it offensive if you do not wear their vintage wedding dress, if you ignored the cake your future mother in law baked, and they will for sure get offended if you designate a number of invites to both of them or if you did not agree inviting long lost relatives you do not even know. They may also interfere with the type of wedding reception you will be having or even where your honeymoon destination is.
But should you really be affected by such situation? Normally, you will be especially if it involves the mother in law and your own mom. But remember though that this is still your wedding and you should be in total control. Although you would want to make them happy even with just wearing their wedding jewelry, it is still important not to back down on what you think is right for the wedding. you can talk to them and state your case. You could also indicate your wedding plans and how you really want them to help.
However, it is still important to compromise. Since you are uniting two families, it will just mean that you will also have to respond to some of their requests especially if it is not too big or if it won’t affect the wedding. But make sure that you are not following everything they want and it seems like they are just relieving their own wedding day. Since it is your day, you should be in total control of it and not the other way around.
